In my opinion, there should be rewards for doing a lot of hard work, but I couldn’t convince even myself that I must have lost weight with all the lifting and pulling I’d done. Lunch at Gerry’s, while satisfying, had certainly counterbalanced any losses. Still I reminded myself that the muscle groups need extra calories, so maybe it wasn’t a complete washout. At the very least I should be even.
David was right about our being right back where we started as far as finding Rags was concerned. We didn’t even dare try the caves again for fear the two men would somehow manage to return and trap us. Though I argued that they seemed to be fairly incompetent criminals. “They couldn’t even keep me under control, David. I’ll bet they give up.”
“And exactly where would you have been if you had overcome them on your own?” he countered. “The fools broke their only flashlight in the struggle.”
“I knew you’d be following us,” I answered, although I’d been so frightened that I hadn’t really thought things through. If I had, however, I would certainly have counted on him.
“We should have tied them up and left them while we explored further,” he said. Hindsight is a strange and wonderful thing.
“Maybe, but I would have been worried the whole time, thinking that they’d somehow gotten loose and were sneaking up on us in the dark.” I noticed that he gave a little shudder at the thought. “Do you think your brother is really living in the cave? How scary.”
“Rags always liked his comforts,” he mused. “But I’ve been checking the house every day, checking everywhere, and I can’t find any sign that he’s been inside.”
“Do you think there’s another way out?”
“If there is, he’d find it. When we were kids he always had an escape plan, or a good explanation, ready.”
“This is one explanation that will have to be good,” I grumbled. By then we’d parked in David’s driveway. At that point, I wasn’t sure just what I should be doing. He made no move to get out, and he didn’t invite me in. On the one hand, I wanted to go home and vegetate until my nerves quieted. On the other, I didn’t trust him not to head straight back to the cave the minute I left him. So we sat.
Surprisingly, I out-waited him. Patience is not usually one of my virtues.
“Come inside,” he offered. “I’ll make coffee and we can figure out a new plan of action. Or we can decide to leave it be. If Rags can’t be bothered with me, there’s no reason for me to worry about him.”
Biting my tongue, I didn’t tell him to quit sulking. I did take him up on the coffee offer. It was so unusual to see him being anything but calm and quietly assured that it frightened me. The little snit, for him, was the equivalent of a full-scale tantrum for most people. It must be horrible for him to be snubbed by the person dearest to him, someone back from the grave.
